WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU?

  • In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), two opponents engage in ground-based, hand-to-hand combat, in order to take a controlling position and submit their opponent through a joint lock or choke.

  • Unlike other martial arts, striking and kicking are not permitted in BJJ. Instead, BJJ uses takedowns and close-contact push, pull, and holding grappling techniques to manipulate and gain leverage over an opponent. Achieving a dominant top position on the ground requires skillful use of defensive guard position while also being able to pass an opponent’s guard. A submission hold leaves the opponent with no other choice than to tap out, be injured, or choke. With proper technique, a smaller opponent can successfully beat a stronger or larger opponent.
